After the treatment of diabetic macular edema with modified grid laser therapy we try to evaluate the visual prognose changes with and without triamcinolone acetonid therapy.
This study included 40 eyes of 35 patients with diabetic macular edema. Modified grid laser photocoagulation were applied to the 20 eyes (group 1) and 1 ml posterior subtenon triamcinolone acetonide were applied after modified grid laser photocoagulation treatment to the other 20 eyes (group 2)
In group 1; snellen visual acuity decreased in 3 of 20 eyes (15%) and visual acuity remained stable or increased one snellen line in 14 of 20 eyes (70%). In 3 of 20 eyes (15%) 2 or more snellen lines improvement was observed. In group 2; there was no visual loss. In 12 of 20 eyes (60%) vision was the same or one snellen line increased. Snellen visual acuity improved by 2 or more lines in 8 of 20 (40%) eyes. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (p<0,01).
We think that posterior subtenon triamcinolone acetonide injection after grid laser photocoagulation is an effective method which decrease diabetic macular edema and increase visual acuity.
