Systemic Risk Factors in Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion

Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the possible risk factors in patients with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO).
Materials and Methods: Twenty-four patients with BRVO and an age and sex-matched control group of 48 people without a history of retinal vascular diseases and systemic diseases were included in this study. The 24 patients with BRVO were asked about any previous history of systemic diseases. The serum homocysteine, total cholesterol, trigliseride, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), white blood cell, hemoglobin, hematocrit and platelet levels were measured in all patients and control group.
Results: Hypertension was detected in 75% of the patients. The serum homocystein, trigliseride and hematocrit levels were found to be significantly higher in the patient group compared to the control group (p=0.002, p=0.018 and p=0.014 respectively). The serum total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, VLDL, white blood cell, hemoglobin and platelet levels were found to be similar in both the patient and control group (p>0.05).
Conclusion: Known risk factors for developing BRVO such as hypertension, hyperhomocysteinemia, hyperlipidemia and higher blood viscosity are thought to be effective in our patients.
