Purpose: To investigate the etiology, age, gender, accompanying eye examination findings in cases with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) undergoing vitreoretinal surgery for recurrent vitreous hemorrhage.
Materials and Method: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 58 eyes of 58 recurrent vitreous hemorrhage patients undergoing vitreoretinal surgery for PDR in Ulucanlar Eye Research and Training Hospital Eye Clinic between June 2003 and May 2008. A complete ophthalmological examination including visual acuity, intraocular pressure, biomicroscobic examination findings, dilated pupil examination of the posterior segment, and ocular ultrasonography were evaluated at preoperative and postoperatively.
Results: There were 27 female (46.5%) and 31 male (53.4%). The average age of patients was 58.7 years (23-80 years). Most of the recurrent vitreous hemorrhage was determined within the first three months after surgery. Incomplete panretinal laser photocoagulation and retinal neovascularization was observed as most common cause of recurrence. Postoperative visual acuity was better than the preoperative level in 26 eyes (44.8%), was worse in 18 eyes (31%) and was the same in 14 eyes (24.1%).
Conclusion: Based on the results that were obtained in this series, there were affirmative effects of second vitreoretinal surgery to the prognosis in cases with recurrent vitreous hemorrhage for PDR.
