Purpose: To evaluate five choroidal hemangiomas treated with photodynamic therapy.
Materials and Methods: Before and after treatment all patients underwent a complete ophthalmic evaluation and ultrasound imaging, fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) and indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) were performed. An exposure of 75 J / cm2 diod laser emitting a light at 692 nm with an exposure time of 125 seconds was applied 5 minutes after the start of the verteporfin infusion (6 mg/m2). The maximum treatment spot diameter was 8000 μm using a Volk QuadrAspheric lens.
Results: After 6-14 months follow-up period, FFA and ICGA showed complete regression of the tumor in all cases. The cystoid macular edema and the serous exudation regressed in all cases. Visual acuity improvement was observed in three cases. In other two cases, the visual acuity remained the same in spite of the tumor regression. These two cases were longstanding and complicated, thus, the functional results were limited. In all cases no damage to retinal vessels was observed. No recurrence was observed in any cases.
Conclusion: Photodynamic therapy of choroidal hemangioma can obtain tumor regression by occlusion of the vascular network. Photodynamic therapy is an effective method in the treatment of choroidal hemangioma.
