Purpose: To examine the maculae of eyes with macula-off regmatogenous retinal detachment by optical coherence tomography (OCT) after scleral buckling surgery.
Materials and Methods: Eighteen eyes of 18 patients with macula-off regmatogenous retinal detachment who had no trauma or other ocular pathologies were included in this prospective study. Scleral buckling surgery were applied to all patients. In addition to ophthalmologic examination, maculae were examined by OCT postoperatively on 1st, 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th months. According to this, presence of subretinal fluid (SRF) on macula, its structure, persistence period, and its effect on visual acuity were evaluated.
Results: SRF was detected in 9 (50%) patients by macular OCT following surgery. This fliud was as a single cyst in 5 eyes, multipl cysts in 1 eye and confluent SRF in 3 eyes. There was no difference according to age and sex between eyes with SRF and without SRF. Preoperative detachment period was longer in eyes with SRF. According to the preoperative and postoperative visual acuities on 1st, 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th months, there was no statistical difference between eyes with SRF and without SRF, SRF was resolved completely after 4.1±2.3 (2-9) months.
Conclusions: SRF detected after retinal detachment surgery may be related to longer detachment period preoperatively. It does not affect visual acuity negatively, and its spontaneous resolution may take months.
