Purpose: To evaluate the difference in intraocular pressure in the early postoperative periods between patients who have undergone vitreoretinal surgery with episcleral vein cauterization and those without episcleral vein cauterization and the influence of cauterization (C) or silicone oil tamponade (SO) on intraocular pressure.

Materials and Methods: Vitreoretinal surgery with episcleral vein cauterization was carried out 23 eyes of 23 patients, whereas vitreoretinal surgery without episcleral vein cauterization was undergone 20 eyes of 20 patients. The patients were classified according to vitreoretinal surgical tecniques (group 1: without C and SO, group 2: without C, with SO, group 3: with C, without SO, group 4: with C and SO). Silicone oil tamponade was used in the group 2 (12 eyes) and group 4 (13 eyes) and was not used in the group 1 (8 eyes) and group3 (10 eyes). Intraocular pressure was measured in patients with Goldman applanation tonometer and ophthalmic examination was performed in patients at the one day and one month after the operation.

Results: The effect of cauterization on intraocular pressure was not statistically significant between eyes without S ( group 1-3) and with S ( group 2-4) at the one day and one month after the operation. While the influence of silicone oil on intraocular pressure was statistically significant between patients with C or without C at the first day postoperatively, the influence of silicone oil on intraocular pressure was not statistically significant at the first month postopratively.

Conclusion: Elevation in intraocular pressure at early postoperative period is not related to blocking effect of cauterization of the episcleral veins on episcleral vascular chanells but to silicone oil tamponade. Keywords : Intraocular pressure, cauterization of episcleral veins, silicone oil tamponade
