Purpose: To compare the clinical features and the complications of acute retinal necrosis (ARN) syndrome in early and late diagnosed cases with the investigation of the importance of early diagnosis on the disease progression.
Materials and Methods: Thirteen eyes of 13 patients with ARN syndrome were examined retrospectively. Patients who admitted to us within 2 weeks period from the begining of symptoms are examined in the early diagnosed patient group (Group 1), and patients who a dmitted to us after 2 weeks period are examined in the late diagnosed patient group (Group 2). According to this, the responses to treatment and the complications of the disease between groups are compared.
Results: While five patients were diagnosed in the early period, 8 patients were sent from other hospitals due to deterioration of symptoms after 2-3 weeks of treatment with topical and oral corticosteroid. There was no statistical difference between groups, in terms of patient ages, visual acuities at 1st day, 1st month and sixth month (p>0.05). The difference was statistically significant between groups in terms of the period that the disease was under control (p=0.006) and the period of disease resolution (p=0.01), these periods were shorter in Group 1. Although the ratio of retinal detachment was 20% in Group 1 and 63%’in Group 2; it was not statistically significant (p>0.05).
Conclusion: In ARN syndrome, the period that the disease is got under control and the period of resolution of lesion were detected to be shorter with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment. There was no significant association with the early diagnosis and the development of retinal detachment.
